If you wince when you consume hot or cold foods, you may have a common problem – sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity is one of the most common dental complaints and can occur for several reasons, including:

  • Tooth decay
  • Teeth grinding
  • Worn tooth enamel
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Defective fillings
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Exposed tooth roots

Dentin is the layer beneath your enamel, and it contains tiny tubules that extend from the outside of your tooth to the nerve in the center. If dentin is exposed, these tubes are stimulated by changes in temperature, which can result in sensitivity and pain. Tooth sensitivity can have a dramatic impact on your life and can even change your eating and drinking habits.

However, sensitive teeth can be treated. Our doctors may recommend desensitizing toothpaste or suggest other appropriate treatment based on the cause of your sensitivity. But one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself if you want to avoid tooth sensitivity is to practice proper oral hygiene.

If you are experiencing sensitivity, please call Wellington Dental to arrange an appointment. At that time, we will be happy to talk to you about your daily oral hygiene routine and concerns about your sensitivity.
